Snowy Owl
Also known as Polar Owl, Arctic Owl or just simply White Owl, is a large, white owl of the true owl family. They are native to the Arctic regions of both North America and the Pallearctic, breeding mostly on the tundra. One of the largest species of owl with mostly white plumage, juvenile and female has more extensive flecks of dark brown while the mature male has less and until 9 years of age, male snowy owl turn pure white hence the nickname Ghost of the Arctic.
Ever since I started bird photography, Snowy Owl has been on top of my favorite raptors due to its beauty with yellow eyes, white plumage and even better if you work with them during sunrise or sunset in the white snow background, it is a hard heart-beating moments one never forget. With that hope of searching for those moments, I have made countless trips to local states of the Northeastern USA, to Minnesota, crossed the border to Ontario and Alberta, Canada, in search of the Ghost of the Arctic for the last 5 winters. I love cold winter mornings bringing fresh air, crisp deep blue sky, that means no heat haze with minimum polluted air; with condition like that no photographer would say no to a beautiful white on white with yellow eyes owl. The question I got asked in those morning was: “ Hey tropical man, What are you doing here?” from the Snowy Owls through their glowing gorgeous eyes =))
